We had a particularly fulfilling swimming session today, Easter Saturday, 7th April 2012.
I say 'we' as I am writing about Elizabeth, Motoko and myself, Fiona, who swim in lane 5.
This morning we were all surprised to find that the pool was so very warm in temperature, it was almost beckoning us back to sleep.
Nevertheless, we swam according to our schedule as best we could, each lane swimming in the languishing warmth of the pool.
Our swimming instructor, Tony, at about quarter to the hour, suddenly asked the three of us, "would we like to learn how to do tumble turns?"
We looked on, struck dumb, knowing instantly that we did want to learn, but not knowing how we could possibly be able to manage this new skill.
We then, each of us, came back to life, and nodded our heads vigorously, "Oh, yes this is something we'd love to begin to learn."
I said, "it would be great to learn how to do tumble tots .."
And so we began. Nose clips on noses, and goggles in place.
Well, what then took place during the next half an hour or so, was the complete engagement of concentration between Tony and his three swimming pupils.

Slowly, and slowly again, we each began to understand how the tumble turn worked, and what we had to do to teach our brain and body so that we could begin to experience how you perform a tumble turn.

Slowly, and slowly again, our tumbles in the water got clearer and stronger, and most noticeably our feet met the tiled wall with developing confidence, and provided greater purpose to our onward stroke, Freestyle.
I think after this rich teaching experience, we each felt very free indeed, with having learnt how to do a tumble turn, it was no longer a technique that we watched our colleagues perform, we now had the ability to perform a tumble turn too!

Thank you Tony for taking hold of the oportunity this morning, to teach Elizabeth, Motoko and myself to do 'tumble tots' - I mean - 'Tumble Turns'.

It is so very rewarding to experience that wonderful feeling of learning a new skill, especially at our 'exquisite' time of life.
