Isle of Wight 2009
Ruislip Northwood Masters Swim Squad successfully defended the Heights Trophy on the Isle of Wight on 20th-21st February
2009.
Competition began on Friday evening and continued all day Saturday, as 30 teams including one from Germany and one
from the Italian Swim Federation, competed in 17 events, ranging in distance from 25m to 800m. Ruislip Northwood’s team of just 11 swimmers competed in over one hundred races between them , winning 61 gold, 13 silver and 12 bronze medals.
Stan Vela, swimming in the 45-49 age group, won the Top Male award having won 14 golds, and Sue Green, also in the 45-49 age group, won the
Top Female award having won 10 golds. But this was a truly team effort as Ruislip faced tough opposition, particularly from the
Otter Masters from Central London , the Royal Navy and Kings Cormorants.
Sarah Lusher (35-39) won 9 golds
Lesley Cordial (40-44), 7 golds
Ray Clarke (70-74) 6
gold, 3 silver, 1 bronze
Mike Goddard (70-74) 5 gold, 4 silver, 1 bronze
Roy Wilson (60-64) 5 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze
Wayne Hirst (45-49) 1 gold, 1 silver, 5 bronze
Lauri Vela (40-44) 1 gold, 1 bronze,
Mark Braithwaite (45-49) 1 silver
Judith Charman (40-44 ) in her first Masters competition , won 3 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze.
All swimmers made huge contributions to the overall points tally, resulting in Ruislip retaining the trophy that they first won last year.
Club Coach Ron Gilder said: “I was thrilled with the way that all of our swimmers performed, and I put the success down to all their hard work and dedication to training.”
There will be no let-up, though, as many of Ruislip’s swimmers have their sights set on qualification for the European Masters Championships to be held in the Spanish city of Cadiz in September this year.
