We were shocked and saddened to learn of the death of David Dines on Wednesday 17th August 2022 shortly after a routine shoulder operation. He was 75 years of age. David joined RNSC Masters in the 1990s and swam with us regularly in lane 3 or 4 until he ceased to be a member in 2012. He kindly volunteered to take over the role of Chairman when Deryk Allsopp left the Club, a role he held for many years. Past and present members remember David as a great storyteller who was always up for a challenge. He entered a number of overseas swimming events – various Open Meets as well as the European and World Masters Championships – in Spain (Malaga, Barcelona and Cadiz), Ireland (Dublin), Guernsey, and Australia. |
He was instrumental in organising these trips as he seemed to have contacts everywhere and was also one of the last to leave the bar once the swimming was over!! David also liked open water swimming and his last competition for the Club was the 3k open water swim at the European Masters at Cadiz in 2009.
Out of the pool/water he also took part in the London to Brighton cycle ride on more than one occasion, in aid of the British Heart Foundation. He was also a member of Harefield Cricket Club and organised for our Club to use their function room for our annual presentation evenings. We last saw David and his partner Linda at the Club’s 30th anniversary party on the Thames in 2019.
His infectious enthusiasm and kindness will not be forgotten and we are grateful for all he did for the Club. His funeral was held on Monday 12 September near Canterbury, Kent and was attended by Roy & Gill Wilson, Eileen Wade and Jill Kirner. The Club also sent a wreath. David leaves two daughters, one son and five grandchildren as well as his partner Linda. He will be missed.
